I've been working on Swoon this week. For those of us that missed out on last years sew a long
Sarah has started a flickr group
Swoon 2013 and some people have half a quilt done already. I'm just starting. I bought FQB of Crazy Daisy and played around with the fabrics to get a pleasing layout. Mum (my colour expert) gave me the nod of approval and I took a deep breath and started cutting.
There's not a lot of wastage on one of the FQ's so careful cutting is needed. Once I had all the pieces cut and HST and Flying Geese made I couldn't resist laying it out. This really is a pretty block design.
The first corner didn't go together too easily but the second and third went better. Directional fabric wasn't recommended on the flickr discussion page but I had already bought the fabric and decided to chance it. I think it works but I'll have to be careful making the next ones as there is quite a bit of stripey fabric in my bundle.
Background fabric is Kona Midnight. The planned recipient for this quilt doesn't like white too much so I think this will be perfect for her.
1 done, 8 more to go!

Cute as can be!!
ReplyDeleteYour block looks great! I love the dark background fabric - perfect choice.
ReplyDeletethis is really beautiful... what trouble did you have putting the first corner together? I am asking as I was considering participating and wondering how it is? I think the background you chose really makes the colors pop!
ReplyDeleteI am stopping by from the WIP hop, my post is here if you have time to stop by :) http://domesticdeficitdisorder.blogspot.com/2013/07/wip-july-17th-edition.html
Thanks for commenting! I had a bit of trouble in terms of accuracy. The first corner I made wasn't quite square but the rest seemed to go easier. There's a bit of work in cutting but in terms of piecing the 4 corners are the same and the centre goes together in no time. Its a really big block finished 24" and probably a really good way to make a bed sized project quickly.
ReplyDeleteI've seen a baby quilt by Camille Roskelly with one swoon block and a large border matching the BGF which seems like a great project to try if you don't want to make the full quilt.
It is gorgeous...this block rocks! Can't wait to get started sewing mine!
ReplyDeleteHi Ruth - your swoon block is gorgeous. I've been wanting to try one, but haven't taken the plunge yet :) Thank you for leaving a lovely comment on my blog (Sewgiving) I tried replying but it says you are a non-reply blogger? I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of your swoon blocks turn out.
ReplyDeleteLove the colors you choose and the pairings you came up with.
