I've been playing around with a block design for a Christmas QAL for the Modern Quilters Ireland Group later on in the year and came up with these three designs based on the traditional Snow Crystals block. I always find it funny with traditional blocks, a tiny change means a big name change on the block so I've called these three Super Frosty, So Frosty and Sub-Zero to try and link them together. I'm always reminded of the Running Man movie with Arnie when I think of sub-zero!

Changing the colour placement & tiling can give really fun results
I'm working on the instructions for various sizes. I like the idea of making a cushion! What do you guys think? Interested in a Christmas Quilt-A-Long in Sept/Oct?
For the moment it's my stop on Ho Ho Ho and on We Sew linky party next Thursday the 18th of June and I'll be sharing the instructions here on the blog so you can make this big block version if you like. Please drop by and join the fun!
So Frosty is so beautiful! What a fabulous pattern for showing off your favourite prints. Love those little raccoon faces. Looking forward to your day on the hop!
ReplyDeleteI really like the oversized block and the raccoon are just too cute!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great design, and I am after some Christmas cushions so great timing :-)
ReplyDeleteI am definitely loving making oversized blocks as quilt tops myself right now. So Frosty turned out great and I think the raccoons are a fun touch!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan on winter, but I could get on board with these Frosty blocks. Great job! I'd love to see some instructions and would play along with a QAL.
ReplyDeleteLOVE how this turned out!! I would totally be in for a QAL, although I probably would not do a Christmas quilt but would love to make one of these blocks! The hard part would be picking one!! :) Can't wait to see how you quilt this one!!
ReplyDeleteLooks amazing. I love them.
ReplyDeleteMy eyes bugged out when I opened your post Ruth. I LOVE this So Frosty Quilt! I am not sure if I will be able to join in a QAL this fall, (doing two already) but I would love to try. I have plans for a large block quilt with the Moda Love pattern, so maybe I can figure out how to switch the fabrics over to yours. That would be a fun challenge!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing some of your process on developing quilt blocks. Those are beautiful and I love the frosty names.
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely! I've been playing with oversized blocks, too--I think they make such a great quilt!
ReplyDeleteI like the colors you used and the oversized blocks are a plus!
ReplyDeleteIt is so cute! Love the coons!
ReplyDeleteFrosty is an apt name! Your colour choice suggests a crackling bracing winter's day. I'd like to make a couple of Christmas cushions in the autumn, so I'm in!
ReplyDeleteAll three block variations are beautiful! The racoons look really cute peeking out all over So Frosty.
ReplyDeleteThis is a gorgeous big block quilt! I also really like all of your block variations - could be a really fun QAL!
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Yes, very interested in a quiltalong with you, Ruth. I'll stay tuned.
