Quilter's Meet and Greet Party

Hello everyone and welcome.  If you have not stopped by before my name is Ruth and I write about my quilty makes, pattern design, art quilt attempts and quite often about our dogs.  We are a Basset Hound and Jack Russell Terrier house in Limerick, Ireland and are very happy to meet you here on our space of the web today for Benita's Meet and Greet Party.


This is me, with Charly, at the Pollack Holes in Kilkee on the west coast of Ireland.  My favourite place.  There is a lot of fun to be had walking floppy earred Bassets on the beach in the winter months where they can bounce about without fear of them wandering off!  Charly on the other hand stays close to me and is always by my side!


 I like to play with design and love both modern quilts and challenge quilts.  As a member of the Irish Patchwork Society we get to exhibit nationally and internationally on small themed pieces and this Dresden mini was my take on Aurora. 


This pieced and appliqued quilt  was made for the Irish Quilter's Showcase for North South East and West.  The top block is the wind pattern at Shannon Airport and the bottom us my version of a Mariner's star. 


This was a very challenging piece and pushed me a lot in terms of design, colour and quilting.


I love to take part in Quilt-A-Long's and charity quilts.  The Koala was designed for a baby quilt for the Henry Bear Charity to give quilts to kids who are undergoing heart operations.


The quilt I am probably best know for is the Rainbow Rose which I designed for a Quilt-A-Long with Modern Quilters Ireland.  It was quilted by my friend Tomomi McElwee of Slaney Handcraft and represented Ireland in the European Quilt Association gallery called Diversity at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham last year.

      Glad you enjoyed your visit. If you come again, our favourite walking beaches with the dogs are on the Clare part of the Wild Atlantic Way. You can make your way all the way up the coastline stopping off in towns and pubs with great seafood along the way!

      Thanks a million. I love a bit of contrast and though I like the greyed muted fabrics a lot I never seem to use them. They sit on the shelf looking down at me so pretty but never seem to fit a project I have in mind.

    Great post, so nice to meet quilters from all over. Your quilts are all beautiful... I hope to learn some more about applique so I can combine applique and piecing as you did in your Rainbow Rose.

      Thanks Karen. I had 3 different applique designs for the corners and went with what I thought would be the easiest. Took longer than I thought to stitch the corner pieces down.

    Mariner's Compass, bright and beautiful. in the late 1800's,my Grandma who was born in Scotland spent some time in Ireland, as a Nanny for a shipping company family. She went with the young daughter when the wee girl went to boarding school in France, or so I was told. Quite something for a young lady then.

      Wow, travelling then would have been long and difficult too. Amazing what people took on and accomplished. My mum is researching her family tree and I've been roped in to help her use ancestry.com and it is fascinating all the links and places the family has spread to.

      Thanks so much. I love traditional blocks and enjoy figuring out a way for them to work for me. Dredens are one of my favourites - so much impact from a block that looks harder than it is!

      Sorry to hear about Jake. They are longer lived than Basset's but still 15 years is too short. Charly is our third JRT and the best dog in the house. She's a miniature so she loves curling up on top of my lap and snoozing. I can manage some handsewing with her in that position but no knitting! She's 12 now but still spritely. They give you so much and ask for so little in return.

      Thanks a million. I don't know why I took it into my head to design my own but it was a lot harder than I thought. Even paper piecing it to get the points to match perfectly was trickier than expected. I learned a lot in that one!

    You work is lovely, Ruth. But you know that already. I love that you push your limits whether it was the Koala design for a worthy cause or the very challenging Mariner's Compass. But what I love most is your radiant smile - it lights up the room and I can feel your sunshine radiating out. Good to meet you again!!!

      Thanks a million Janine, when I made my firt quilt I was so unsure of fabric combinations I got my mum to help. She used to dress shop windows and while we don't have the same taste in anything she was brilliant to help with colour.

      Thanks a million Brenda. I love Dresdens. they are easier than they look but give a lot of impact. I don't think there is a Dresden quilt I've seen and not liked!

    Love your use of bright colors, especially the Mariners Star. The background fabric in the pic looks like sort of a coffee with cream tone, very effective. That was indeed a technical challenge, something I’d never attempt.

      Thanks Paula, I found an ombre fabric in navy and thought I'd try it in a beige tone too so ordered some online and it was the wrong tone of brown but then I thought brown can be modern looking too and would work well with the pinks. The yellow is what popped it for me and I think made it work in the end.

      Thanks Carol, my friend Claire is doing a quilt judge course and picked Dresdens for one of her projects and what amazed me was all the different ways they can be used - a very versatile block!

    Your Ticker Tape Wilbur is absolutely adorable! You inspired me to plan to make one of my own, for our dogs. If I do, I'll be sure to share a picture with you. Thanks for the tutorial.

      I'd love to see it. I had the best fun making Wilbur in fabric and even more fun sharing the process in workshops with the Irish Patchwork Society. People have made dolphins, elephants, horses, roses, guitars and even dragons. Anything that looks good as a silhouette looks great as a pictorial ticker tape quilt!

    All your projects are beautiful. I can understand why you are best known for Rainbow Rose. I live in the US and had the opportunity to go to England and join with other quilters, most from the US. Our finale was to go to the Festival of Quilts. I think it was two years ago.       There are so many festivals in the US and we get to see photos online but it doesn't compare to seeing them in person. The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham is the biggest one closest to us so I visited again this year and am planning on going back again next year. Part of the fun is recognising online friends quilts and part is meeting up with other quilters!

    Thank you for sharing your blog and your quilts. I have made a similar quilt to Rainbow Rosie but done in pastels. Ireland is a beautiful place. I was fortunate to be able to visit there a few years ago. Would love to go back and experience more.

      Pastels are a fabulous choice for a star surround block. I don't have many in my stash nor many grey toned fabrics. I seem to be getting carried away with turquoise at the moment!
