This is me, with Charly, at the Pollack Holes in Kilkee on the west coast of Ireland. My favourite place. There is a lot of fun to be had walking floppy earred Bassets on the beach in the winter months where they can bounce about without fear of them wandering off! Charly on the other hand stays close to me and is always by my side!
I like to play with design and love both modern quilts and challenge quilts. As a member of the Irish Patchwork Society we get to exhibit nationally and internationally on small themed pieces and this Dresden mini was my take on Aurora.
This pieced and appliqued quilt was made for the Irish Quilter's Showcase for North South East and West. The top block is the wind pattern at Shannon Airport and the bottom us my version of a Mariner's star.
This was a very challenging piece and pushed me a lot in terms of design, colour and quilting.
I love to take part in Quilt-A-Long's and charity quilts. The Koala was designed for a baby quilt for the Henry Bear Charity to give quilts to kids who are undergoing heart operations.
The quilt I am probably best know for is the Rainbow Rose which I designed for a Quilt-A-Long with Modern Quilters Ireland. It was quilted by my friend Tomomi McElwee of Slaney Handcraft and represented Ireland in the European Quilt Association gallery called Diversity at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham last year.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed some of what I share here on my blog. Please visit Victoriana Quilt Designs by clicking on the button below to enter the draw for some fabulous prizes!
I visited Ireland last year and loved it! thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGlad you enjoyed your visit. If you come again, our favourite walking beaches with the dogs are on the Clare part of the Wild Atlantic Way. You can make your way all the way up the coastline stopping off in towns and pubs with great seafood along the way!
DeleteOf all the countries I've visited, Ireland is one I'd return to in a heartbeat. I enjoyed your post and your display of beautiful quilting work! Thanks for sharing -- and nice to meet you! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you Denise, hopefully you get the chance to come back and visit again soon!
DeleteBeautiful! I wish I used the brighter colors the way you do. They look so happy.
ReplyDeleteThanks a million. I love a bit of contrast and though I like the greyed muted fabrics a lot I never seem to use them. They sit on the shelf looking down at me so pretty but never seem to fit a project I have in mind.
DeleteGreat post, so nice to meet quilters from all over. Your quilts are all beautiful... I hope to learn some more about applique so I can combine applique and piecing as you did in your Rainbow Rose.
ReplyDeleteThanks Karen. I had 3 different applique designs for the corners and went with what I thought would be the easiest. Took longer than I thought to stitch the corner pieces down.
DeleteSo nice to 'meet' you Ruth. Love this colourful selection of quilts!
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda and thanks for stopping by!
DeleteThat Koala is adorable!
ReplyDeleteA lady from Australia made a boy and a girl version for ther grandchildren and sent me a photo - was so much fun to see!
DeleteSuch wonderful quilts and you use such vibrant colors!
ReplyDeleteThanks a million. It's probably the grey skies in rainy Limerick that make me want to use bright sunshiny things!
DeleteMariner's Compass, bright and beautiful. in the late 1800's,my Grandma who was born in Scotland spent some time in Ireland, as a Nanny for a shipping company family. She went with the young daughter when the wee girl went to boarding school in France, or so I was told. Quite something for a young lady then.
ReplyDeleteWow, travelling then would have been long and difficult too. Amazing what people took on and accomplished. My mum is researching her family tree and I've been roped in to help her use ancestry.com and it is fascinating all the links and places the family has spread to.
DeleteI love your Compass. Great choice of color.
ReplyDeleteThank you! I'm hoping to try make a second but EPP it as I think that might be a tad easier!
DeleteSO nice to meet you. Love that Koala quilt. Like all bright color quilts especially Rainbow Rose. I am also a fan of dresden quilts and your mini dresden is delightful. Thanks for sharing via Meet&Greet.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much. I love traditional blocks and enjoy figuring out a way for them to work for me. Dredens are one of my favourites - so much impact from a block that looks harder than it is!
DeleteYour quilts are lovely and I am now a new follower via email. Please give Charly a hug from me. We lost our beloved JRT, Jake last year.
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear about Jake. They are longer lived than Basset's but still 15 years is too short. Charly is our third JRT and the best dog in the house. She's a miniature so she loves curling up on top of my lap and snoozing. I can manage some handsewing with her in that position but no knitting! She's 12 now but still spritely. They give you so much and ask for so little in return.
DeleteYou have some beautiful quilts you've shared. I particularly like your little koala bear. Your use of bright, fun colors is inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks a million. I named the Koala Kenny after the tv ad where the Koala steals Cushelle toilet roll as its so soft!
DeleteNice to read more about you Ruth.
ReplyDeleteAll your quilts are gorgeous, but I especially love your Mariner's Star.
Barbara x
Thanks a million. I don't know why I took it into my head to design my own but it was a lot harder than I thought. Even paper piecing it to get the points to match perfectly was trickier than expected. I learned a lot in that one!
DeleteI can see why you are known for your Rainbow Rose quilt. It is stupendous!! Love all your modern quilts. Very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy. I had a lot of fun with it and the quilt- a-long for it went very well. My first and only QAL so I was quite nervous!
DeleteLovely to meet you and your blog. Love your projects.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Tammy and thanks for taking the time to visit.
DeleteRainbow Rose is spectacular!!! SEW nice to meet you during Benita's event. Off to see what other wonders await on your blog.
ReplyDeleteThanks a million! It has been lovley to be a part of the meet and greet and see many quilters blogs I hadn't visited before. Lots of lovely inspiration going on in the event!
DeleteYou work is lovely, Ruth. But you know that already. I love that you push your limits whether it was the Koala design for a worthy cause or the very challenging Mariner's Compass. But what I love most is your radiant smile - it lights up the room and I can feel your sunshine radiating out. Good to meet you again!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks a million Preeti. I love the challenge of figuring things out and don't mind the maths of it. The quilting is what continues to stump me a lot of the time!
DeleteI enjoyed seeing all your quilts. You use wonderful colour combinations :)
ReplyDeleteThanks a million Janine, when I made my firt quilt I was so unsure of fabric combinations I got my mum to help. She used to dress shop windows and while we don't have the same taste in anything she was brilliant to help with colour.
DeleteNice to know you better Ryth! I'm a long time ago follower, and I love your quilts! Love Aran Islands too, the only part of Ireland I know a little ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Frederique. The Aran islands are brilliant and the best place to visit on the atlantic side in the summer. The water is freezing cold though!
DeleteI love all of your quilts, but I think that the Dresden is my favorite. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks a million Brenda. I love Dresdens. they are easier than they look but give a lot of impact. I don't think there is a Dresden quilt I've seen and not liked!
DeleteYour Rainbow Rose is a favorite of mine - so beautiful! I enjoy your blog, Ruth, and was happy to meet up with you again through this meet and greet event!
ReplyDeleteThanks Diann it was lovely to cathc up and comment. Nice to make the effort instead of passive reading on bloglovin!
DeleteI have to agree with Denise up there--I'd return to Ireland in a heartbeat! Beautiful country and wonderful people! Thanks for sharing your talent--such beautiful quilts!
ReplyDeleteThanks a million Cheree. Hopefully you get the opportunity to visit us again soon. There is a lot of coastline to follow and see!
DeleteBeautiful work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Patty and thanks for stopping by.
DeleteLove your use of bright colors, especially the Mariners Star. The background fabric in the pic looks like sort of a coffee with cream tone, very effective. That was indeed a technical challenge, something I’d never attempt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Paula, I found an ombre fabric in navy and thought I'd try it in a beige tone too so ordered some online and it was the wrong tone of brown but then I thought brown can be modern looking too and would work well with the pinks. The yellow is what popped it for me and I think made it work in the end.
DeleteThis meet n greet was a wonderful idea. Love your bright rainbow roseand koalaquilt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jo and thanks for visiting.
DeleteI love to make Dresden's so looking at yours was such a treat...they are beautiful! Rainbow Rose is so gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol, my friend Claire is doing a quilt judge course and picked Dresdens for one of her projects and what amazed me was all the different ways they can be used - a very versatile block!
DeleteI love seeing your quilts Ruth, you have such an amazing eye for color!
ReplyDeleteThanks a million Cheryl. If only I could convince the household to go with my colour choices for the walls!
DeleteWhat a fun collection of quilts you have made!
ReplyDeleteThank you Alycia and thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment!
DeleteI love Dresden's and hounds😀
ReplyDeleteThey do make a great mix! A lot to see in a small package.
DeleteWonderful Rainbow Rose! Nice to meet you, visiting from the Meet and Greet.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carole and thanks for visiting!
DeleteYour Ticker Tape Wilbur is absolutely adorable! You inspired me to plan to make one of my own, for our dogs. If I do, I'll be sure to share a picture with you. Thanks for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see it. I had the best fun making Wilbur in fabric and even more fun sharing the process in workshops with the Irish Patchwork Society. People have made dolphins, elephants, horses, roses, guitars and even dragons. Anything that looks good as a silhouette looks great as a pictorial ticker tape quilt!
DeleteAll your projects are beautiful. I can understand why you are best known for Rainbow Rose. I live in the US and had the opportunity to go to England and join with other quilters, most from the US. Our finale was to go to the Festival of Quilts. I think it was two years ago. Thanks for participating in the Meet and Greet.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many festivals in the US and we get to see photos online but it doesn't compare to seeing them in person. The Festival of Quilts in Birmingham is the biggest one closest to us so I visited again this year and am planning on going back again next year. Part of the fun is recognising online friends quilts and part is meeting up with other quilters!
DeleteThank you for sharing your blog and your quilts. I have made a similar quilt to Rainbow Rosie but done in pastels. Ireland is a beautiful place. I was fortunate to be able to visit there a few years ago. Would love to go back and experience more.
ReplyDeletePastels are a fabulous choice for a star surround block. I don't have many in my stash nor many grey toned fabrics. I seem to be getting carried away with turquoise at the moment!
DeleteYour quilts are beautiful! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks a million and thanks for visiting and taking the time to read and comment!
DeleteYour quilts are filled with wonderful colour! Thank you for having us over for a visit.
ReplyDeleteThanks and great to have taken part and met so many lovely quilters!
DeleteI so love your colour sense and style, Ruth!
ReplyDeleteYour Basset Hound quilt is marvelous!!
Thanks for being part of the Quilters Meet & Greet! <3
Thanks Benita this was a brilliant idea and delighted to have been a part of it!
DeleteI can understand why you known for Rainbow Rose. It is a gorgeous quilt. I noticed you have some wonderful photos of your quilts; that's an art, too.
ReplyDeleteThanks a million. I could do with taking the time to photograph the finished bigger quilts properly but am usually so happy to be finished its the last thing on my mind. Something to work on!
DeleteYour Rainbow rose is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love your mini Dresden, beautiful colours in all your work, it's really lovely to meet you!
ReplyDeleteLoooove your Quilts! The Dresden Rose is AMAZING & so is the Compass! Thank you for inviting us all in to visit your Blog :)
ReplyDeleteSuch colorful rainbows! It's been great to get to know so many quilters on the M&G this month. Thanks for joining in!
ReplyDeleteLove your Koala Bear quilt and the Rainbow Rose is striking.
ReplyDeleteWhen do we get to meet Hank?! :D
