It's that time of year again - the Sew Mama Sew giveaway has come around again! A warm welcome to all new visitors. My name is Ruth and I share my quilty makes, design ideas and things I've learned here in this space. The dogs make an appearance from time to time too!
Recently I've been making these and playing with fabric design doodles!

This year, I'm giving away a set of creative grids circular rulers. Creative
grids are my favourite brand and I would be lost without my 14" x 4"
ruler. It is my go to and I use it all the time for cutting strips and
small patchwork pieces.

ReplyDeleteThe only speciality ruler I've used is a wedge ruler for Dresden plates which are fun to make and quicker than they seem.
ReplyDeleteI love creative grid rulers!! I own about 8 of them --various sizes of square from 2 1/2 by 2 1/2 to 12 1/2 by 12 1/2 and the 6 1/2 by 24 1/2 and 8 1/2 by 24 1/2!! ReplyDeleteI've never used a specialty ruler. I have a 12.5" square, a 6.5" square, & a 6"x24". I would love to get a stripology ruler in the future.

ReplyDeleteI have a Dresden plate ruler that I have used a couple of times, but other than that my rulers are all the standard 6" or 12" combinations, perhaps I need to be more adventurous with rulers :)

ReplyDeleteI've never used a specialty ruler, but could certainly use a curved one to help with my wonky cutting!
ReplyDeleteI have a TON of specialty rulers - I'm guilty, I love gadgets :) My favorite is the Curves for Squares ruler (Creative Grids - also my favorite brand!). I've actually used it more than once which is more than I can say for my other specialty rulers!! My go to ruler that I use daily is my 7.5"x 24.5" ruler.
ReplyDeleteI love my straight ruler but I would love to try an apple core shaped one. I have recently been watching youtubes to learn how to properly use a triangle ruler I have. Curves are such a challenge for me- I would definitely use these.

ReplyDeleteI usually only buy specialty rulers if its for a shape I can't cut with a regular ruler. So most of them are curved ruler/templates.

ReplyDeleteI LOVE my creative grid ruler! I have the 12.5 by 3.5 one and I also use it for nearly all of my scrappy and small cutting. I would really like to get a creative grids square one as well in a 4.5 inch size.

ReplyDeleteI've only just started using two new specialty ruler. One is a Dresden/wedge ruler. The other is a 60degree ruler. Its all so new to me that I can't give advice, but I'm so excited by the possibilities. Looking forward to reading all the comments.

ReplyDeleteMy favourite ruler would be my simple 6.5 x 6.5 inch ruler, or the 14 x 4 inch one, I use those most. I also have the binding tool (although that still confuses me, lol!) and a ruler for dresden plates. But I use both of the latter very seldomly.

ReplyDeleteThe only specialty rulers I've used so far are the easy angle, companion angle, and tri-recs, all recommended by Bonnie Hunter and used in her mysteries. I am intrigued by many others, and bought the dresden ruler, but haven't tried it yet.

ReplyDeleteI have a few specialty rulers I picked up during Saturday Sampler at my LQS, but I don't use them. I do love my Creative Grids, though, and have a nice little collection, now. I use the 6 1/2" square the most, I think.
ReplyDeleteI have a few specialty rulers, the creative grids pineapple ruler (haven't used it yet). A flying geese and a half square triangle Bloc Loc ruler, haven't used it much yet either. Seems like my Creative Grids 6.5 X 12.5 is still the one!

ReplyDeleteA couple of weeks ago I bought a hex-n-more ruler, but haven't done much with it yet. Apart from the straight rulers, the ones that I couldn't be without are the Easy Angle ruler and the Companion Angle ruler, often used together.
ReplyDeleteI like speciality rulers that can be used for multiple quilt designs. Some of my favorites are the kaleidoscope ruler, the 60 degree triangle, and the Bloc_loc ruler for HSTs.

ReplyDeleteI love my 12.5" square ruler since most bee blocks are meant to be 12.5 unfinished. I recently bought clear template rulers for teh La Passacaglia quilt though they haben't arrived yet so I can't say if I love them yet or not- but I hope they make life easier!!!

I have a curvy one but haven't used it yet. I would love love love to win the circles as I do a lot with circles and these would be a boon to cutting. I own 2 specialty rulers. One is kite-shaped to make spiderweb scrap quilts (ruler by Marti Michell - I recommend) & the other is a circle cut ruler I use to draw lines for hand-quilting in a baptist fan pattern -- I've never actually used it for cutting!
ReplyDeleteI love Creative Grids rulers! I have been replacing my "other" rulers over time with CG rulers, but I don't have any circular ones. My favorite ruler is a tie between my 2.5 x 36, and my 2.5 x 6 (extremes?). I'd be lost without my 2.5 square, lately, because I've been working on Economy blocks (LOVE).

ReplyDeleteI just got my first specialty rulers for my birthday - they haven't even been used yet. I got a few as I am just getting into quilting & I am loving it. I don't have any curves yet though. I have a dresden, a Hex and more & a Side Kick ruler now.

ReplyDeleteI am a beginner sewist so I for now have the basics but my sister was visiting with all her sewing gear and she had a Creative Grid ruler I have fallen for. It is the 6.5 x 12 ruler with all the 1/2 " marked...love it!
ReplyDeleteI have one or two but I doubt I ever use them - I use my 24x6 for the serious cutting into the stash stuff, a 12x6 for regular cutting and I have a 4,5 square one that I use to trim those HSTs for the 9-patch-12,5" blocks ... I think they are OLFA ..
ReplyDeleteI only have one set of specialty rulers (for making different sizes of a scrappy block pattern). I mostly just use my long ruler (forget the dimensions on that one!) or my square rulers (have a 4, 5, and 12.5 size).

ReplyDeleteI recently bought the X-Block ruler when I was a quilt show and am currently working on a quilt using it. I love that using this ruler there is no waste, because what you cut off is used in the border. My favorite ruler I use all the time in June Tailor's Shape Cut Plus ruler with the slots.

ReplyDeleteI recently bought a Hex and More ruler which is my first specialty ruler. The rulers I use the most are my 6.5"x24" and 12.5"x12.5". I also have a thin gridded 2"x18" ruler that is flexible and great for pattern making, but definitely NOT for rotary cutting!
ReplyDeleteI generally use either my 6x30 or my 3x18 rulers. But if I'm cutting a lot of similar shapes from a strip, I'll go to a ruler that has the correct angles on the end, such as my Easy 6 and Easy 8 triangle rulers. I also have curved rulers that allow for drunkard's path type shapes, and the Tri-Recs combo, as well as a set of one patch templates for charm quilts such as tumbler, apple core, and others. But I mostly use the ones I listed first.

ReplyDeleteRuth, I also love the Creative Grids because they handle so well. I actually don't own many rulers, but I have a large metal ruler, 36" long, that I purchased in a super hardware store. It's honestly my favorite for quick cutting and stability.

ReplyDeleteA great question -- I loved reading everyone's answers as I'm very intrigued by specialty rulers. It seems like they should make cutting faster, but they just confuse me, especially those where the numbers or angles correspond to the finished block rather than what's being cut. But I love curved templates!
ReplyDeleteI definitely have a ruler problem. My favorites are the add-a-quarter and add-an-eigth for paper piecing.

I don't have any specialty rulers and have just rely upon creating my own guide and drawing the line I want to cut on the fabric if it isn't a straight line ;) These rulers would make cutting circles such a dream!

ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to replace all my regular rulers with Creative Grids because I am loving the ones I do have and would like al the same rulers for consistency (sometimes I wonder if my cut pieces are off because apart from my CG ones, each of the others are different brands so the lines aren't always going to be the same). As for specialty rulers, I love the Bloc Locs for HSTs as well as the Hex and More ruler. Working with curves is something I want to do more so these ones would be a great help!
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite rulers is the O'Lipfa Lip edge ruler. With it's measurements being only 4" wide but with the longer 36" length it's ideal for cutting many strips and borders. Lovely Giveaway, thanks for the chance.

ReplyDeleteI used to think you only needed 1 or 2 rulers, but my ruler collection seems to be have rapidly expanded in the past few years. Most of my rulers are standard ones e.g. 6 1/2 x 12 1/2, a few long ones for cutting out strips and binding. Also love the little square rulers (e.g. 2, 3 and 5 inch ones).
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a fan of specialty rulers, but I did buy a Kaleidoscope ruler from Creative Grids which was very good. I didn't want to make a foundation-pieced version and didn't fancy the thought of cutting out all the templates separately; so the ruler made short work out of cutting out the templates.
I don't really have too many specialty rulers. I bought the Fons & Porter hst rulers and I do plan on using them. I also have a hex n more ruler that is still in the package. Such is life, thanks, peterstankovich@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI mainly use my 8 1/2" x 24 1/2", square 6 1/2", square 12 1/2" rulers, and Easy Angle and Companion Angle rulers for triangles/geese units. I find those brilliant; no trimming of HST!!

ReplyDeleteI am still fairly new to sewing and have invested primarily in building my stash so I don't have a ton of ruler's yet. I love my 6.5" x 24" for general cutting, my 12" x 12" for squaring up and my add a quarter for paper piecing. Aside from that I have not yet had the opportunity to play! I love all rulers. My favorite is my strip cut ruler from June Taylor which enables you to cut a lot of strips at once.

ReplyDeleteI do not use specialty rulers. I have a few plastic templates (e.g. Dresden wedge, hexies, drunkard's path) and a large equilateral triangle ruler, but no fancy shortcut rulers. My rulers are just standard. I use my 4.5 and 6.5 inch squares the most - after the long 24 x 6.5 inch one. The small squares are handy for cutting the parts of a block when working in a small space.

ReplyDeleteI have an all in one ruler which works for all the things I am doing. Sometimes I feel the wish for e special ruler, like a circle , lol! But most of the time i am very content with this only one.

I use my 1/8" ruler a lot. I do mini quilts and lots of paper piecing so it really get a work out. Would love the circle rulers....I use plates, saucers, cups and bowls for circles!! LOL! Thanks for the chance to "upgrade"!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite specialty rulers are the add-a-quarter and add-an-eighth rulers. I use them all the time for paper piecing. I also just bought a bloc loc ruler to square my half square triangle pieces.
